A Happy Anniversary
This month marks 20 years since I started working as a builder for Santa Cruz
guitar Company. In the 2 1/2 years of building, I put together the tops, back,
and sides on 450 Santa Cruz guitars. During that time I got to hand guitars
to Doc Watson during a shop visit, work on building Norman Blake's 12 Fret
D, surivive the October 1989 earthquake, help Richard work through his business
divorce from his original partner, and move the shop into larger quarters in
1990. Since September of 1990 I have had well over a thousand new and used
SCGC guitars come through the shop. It has been quite a ride so far.
BASS NEWS
Paesold 4/4 Basses are Back in Stock
I'm pleased to have 4 examples of my personal favorite basses back in stock.
These are two 592 4/4 models, a 593 4/4 model, and a violin corner 595 4/4 model.
These basses are out of setup from Jeff Sahs' shop and out on the showroom floor.
I was able to secure these basses at very attractive prices and that will be
reflected in the sale prices. For more information, see their listings on the "Paesold
- Hofner" bass page. You can call or email for the sale prices. Additionally,
I'll be heading over to Hagenau, Germany in early July to visit the Hofner factory
where these basses are made to order more for fall and winter delivery.

Used Brazilian Rosewood Tony Rice Models in stock
There is an unusally good selection of three used Tony Rice models with my own
supplied Brazilian Rosewood sets and my own supplied stiff European Spruce
tops available for the Bluegrass festival season. A custom wide neck (1 3/4" nut,
2 5/16" bridge") standard Tony Rice version from 1998 was one of
the last that I was able to order with a non-standard neck. The 1998 Tony Rice
Professional has a hard, bright tone that will cut through any Bluegrass jam
session. The 2007 Tony Rice Professional has a rich, deep vintage voice that
will remind you of a good wartime D-28. Additonally, I have a new Brazilian
Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce custom Tony Rice and a fantastic new Brazilian
Rosewood and European Spruce Tony Rice Professional in stock. Come by the shop
to play them and take home your favorite one! For full descriptions and photos,
see the Santa Cruz Tony Rice page.
45 style Santa Cruz Guitars in stock
The incoming 1939 Martin D-45 will find good company when it arrives. I have
in stock now two used 45 style Santa Cruz Guitar company instruments made
with my own supplied Brazilian Rosewood and my own supplied stiff European
Spruce or Adirondack Spruce tops. The 12 Fret OOO dates from 1996. It is
lightly made and very responsive. The top color has darkened to a deep golden
amber. It is fully described and photographed on the Santa Cruz Smaller Sizes
page. The 12 Fret D was made for me in 2001. It features the tapered brace
voicing on an Adirondack Spruce top that I favor in a rosewood 12 Fret D
configuration. It is the loudest Santa Cruz Dreadnought that I've ever had
in the shop. This 45 style 12 Fret D is fully described and photographed
on the Santa Cruz Dreadnoughts page.
New Brazilian Rosewood Santa Cruz OMs in stock
I have two new Brazilian Rosewood Santa Cruz OMs in stock, using my own supplied
top and body woods. OM-3548 has a set of beautifully quartersawn orange-red
Brazilian Rosewood that is nice and dense with a singing tap tone. The sides
have lots of spiderwebbing figure. The top grade Adirondack Spruce top is
quite stiff and ringy for a clear bell-like tone that will mellow with play
to a clear vintage tone that will remind you of a great 1930 style OM. OM-3562
has more of a vintage look with a pyramid bridge, black-bound fingerboard,
unbound Brazilian Rosewood headstock, and abalone diamonds and squares inlay.
The wilder looking Brazilian Rosewood has extremely well-defined grain lines
and patches of bright orange, reds, and deep purples. The Master grade European
Spruce top is really gorgeous and gives the guitar the classic complex overtones
the European Spruce top Santa Cruz Oms are famous for. Both of these guitars
are described and photographed on the Santa Cruz
Smaller Sizes page.
Figured Mahogany Santa Cruz Guitars in Stock
One of the good surprises in the February shop move was rediscovering a batch
of several sets of very dense, figured Honduras Mahogany that I hadn't seen
in 6 years. This spring I had Santa Cruz Guitar Company make 3 Adirondack Spruce
top guitars made with this Mahogany. The extra density gives these guitars
more power and definition throughout the tonal ranges. SSJ-5677 is found described
in the Steve Swan Jumbos page. The 1942 Bluegrass D (D-5687) and the D P/W
(D-5684) are found in the Santa Cruz Dreadnoughts
page. Come on in and try
them out.
Santa Cruz Steve Swan Jumbos Back in Stock
I have replenished
the supply of the popular Santa Cruz Guitar Company Steve Swan
Jumbos.
Just added to stock now are 2 custom versions
in Indian Rosewood and European Spruce, a custom
red finish quilted Maple and Adirondack Spruce
example, and an attractively priced used custom
Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce version with
1 3/4" nut width. Along with the remnaining
custom Koa and Adirondack Spruce example, there
is once again a good selection of these guitars
that are so versatile for flatpicking and fingerstyle
playing. Check the "Steve Swan Jumbos" page
for complete descriptions, photos, and pricing.

and restringing bench area. Please call to make sure that going
to be in during these hours. With enough notice, I can make appointments
for most evening or weekends. I'm often running errands, picking
up or taking insruments to repair people, or showing instruments
