A very successful workshop by Orrin Star, "What the Tab Won't Tell You"
Going beyond the skeletal structure of tablature and notation in your flatpicking collection, Orrin Star got into the real meat of the parts of playing that flesh out a fiddle tune or lead guitar break into a much more musical statement. Orrin Star brought the experience as a singer and melody player which helped him to win the 1976 Nationsl Flatpicking Championship. Orrin drew on his deep understanding of Carter style, Norman Blake style, crosspicking, floating, and other techniques.
Among the concepts and techniques that Orrin Star explored:
- How to think like a fiddler
- Using lyrics and singing styles to guide your solos
- Why and how certain notes are accented
- The role of double stops and harmonized leads
- How to properly alternate your pick strokes
- Making more of a rhythm statement in your lead playing
- Use of "timing strums" to make pauses more colorful
