The Tony Rice model began in 1979 as a stage and touring replacement for Tony's 1935 D-28, formerly owned by Clarence White. Tony wanted a functional replacement rather than just a copy of the standard specifications for a D-28 of that year. The most striking characteristics of Tony's old Martin are the responsiveness, clear trebles, and volume balance for all of the strings. Many refinements have been made through the years and the Tony Rice model has always been my best-selling dreadnought since 1990. In the mid-1990s I took a few orders for guitars that were even closer in specification to Tony Rice's personal Santa Cruz guitar and suggested in 1996 that we make it a regular model (without the troublesome long bridge saddle) and name it the Tony Rice Professional. This upper end Brazilian Rosewood version of the Tony Rice model has also been quite successful in the last 10 years. My personal favorite versions of Tony Rice and Tony Rice Professional models have the stiff European Spruce tops that I choose carefully from my own stock of wood. The Adirondack Spruce top versions also enjoy a great popularity among players who want a fatter, smoother, more "vintage" sound. |
