Dreadnoughts

SCGC Logo
This page represents a broad category of all 12 and 14 fret Gibson and Martin derived Santa Cruz dreadnoughts with the exceptions of the Tony Rice model, the Steve Swan Jumbos, and the Bob Brozman Baritone models. There are three main top brace voicing types, the tapered (D), double tapered (DH), and scalloped (12 Fret D, 1942 Bluegrass D). There is a wide variety of neck profile shapes and widths available. Most of the Dreadnoughts that I stock are custom instruments of my design and I supply almost all the top woods as well as much of the body woods specially selected from my own stock. I have my own proprietary model, the 1942 Bluegrass D, which draws many of its functional features from wartime D-18s and could be viewed as a Mahogany companion model to the ever-popular Tony Rice model.

New 1942
Bluegrass D (DSS-5609)
This proprietary model made only for my shop incorportates a lot of features from a specific 1942 Martin D-18 that I sold to Alan Senauke in 1984, now owned by performer Kathy Kallick. Honduras Mahogany back, sides and neck, Artist Grade stiff Adirondack Spruce with nice even grain, Waverly tuners with ivoroid buttons, Unbound Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with pearl "SCGC" logo, 1 11/16" nut width , Vintage V-shape neck profile, Black bound ebony fingerboard with vintage style snail shell fingerboard dots, Tortoiseshell body binding, Line type 18 style rosette purfling, Black line backstrip and endstrip, Ebony bridge with 2 3/16" string spread, Post-1938 X-brace position for clearer trebles and more complete tonal balance, Special extra responsive scalloped brace voicing for a true wartime era vintage tone. This example has a bright, stringy sound that is great for lead playing, fiddle tunes, or as a mahognay version of a Tony Rice style guitar. Very easy to play. Strap button installed in treble side neck heel. A few dings and scratches. With hardshell case.
